I am trying to locate any relatives who may have further information or photographs of the family of my Grandfather George Stewart. He was born at 40 Commerce Street, Lossiemouth on 25 April 1887. I believe his brothers and sisters were William, John, Annie, Robert, James, Isabella. Their parents were William Stewart born 1856 ElginMoray and Isabella Smith born 1855 Mid Street, Fraserburgh. My Grandfather George emigrated to Australia in 1913 and married my Grandmother in 1920. I believe he, and one of my Grandmothers brothers, George Macdonald, visited Lossiemouth between 1916 and 1918 during leave from the Army in WW1. On some postcards, mention is made of returning home to 36 Commerce Street and in other papers, 39 Commerce Street is mentioned. Possibly other Stewart relatives also lived in these houses. I believe George was a carpenter and worked on some buildings in Lossiemouth, however I believe his father or grandfather may have been fishermen, as was Isabella Smiths family. Her father was William Smith and mother also Isabella Smith. My Grandfather married my Grandmother in Australia on his return from WW1 service. Any help would be greatly appreciated as George Stewart died when my Father was 4, and my brothers and I would love to know more about our Scottish background. Thank you Anne Stewart.

Although my mothers family name MURISON is from Gamrie and Alvah in what used to be the County of Banff, the GARROW family of Dufftown, Moray married into the family in a big way in the mid 1800s. The marriage of James Garrow and Margaret BOOTH begat Isabella, who married my great great uncle James Murison and then emigrated to Elgin County, Ontario, Canada in c1871. Her brother, William married Jane Keith and their sons married into the same Murison family. Isabellas sister, Margaret, married Francis Murison, my great grandfather. I would be happy to exchange information on these two families if anyone is interested.

Hi everyone and a Happy New Year 2013 to one and all. I wonder if anyone knows the Thomson family descendants of Elsie and Alexander George. Possibly in Aberlour Elsie was my deceased fathers mother but gave him to her sister Lily to care for. Also does anyone know what is now on the site of the Blacksboat Sawmill, Knockando where my father was born. p.s. Reid was the name of the sisters Elsie and Lily. Elsie and Lilys mother was a McLennan before she became a Reid. Her name was also Elsie. Lily married a Duff and has surviving relatives and I am hoping not to upset anyone searching for my ancestry.

I am searching for information on the Howisons in Moray. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks to MBGRG and to this site I have obtained valuable information on Archibald Howison, b1803 d1874 Knockando, his wife Margaret, nee Nicoll, b1799 d1871 Dallas and some of their children. It appears that Archibald Howison was a gamekeeper and that his son John, b1843 d1885, died at Knockando House. I have not yet established what importance Knockando House had at that time. Nor do I have much other information about their respective lives. Perhaps there exists some historical document on Moray, Dallas or Knockando which would help me. Any suggestions welcome.

My Forres ancestor farmed in Jamaica during late 1700s and early 1800s. Several of his children were born there. He returned to Forres in 1818 and died there soon after. I wonder if he went there with an organised agricultural company. Has anyone an ancestor who left the Moray area for Jamaica around that time period.

Cool site. I especially appreciate the opportunity to share information. I am looking for people descended from James Morrison and Isabelle or Elizabeth Forbes who settled in Botriphnie around 1810, especially thier great grandsons, George Morrison, b. Botriphnie, 19.02.1882 and John Morrison, b. Botriphnie, 13.08.1884, who, I believe, emigrated to Canada. After that the trail goes cold.

Looking for researchers of George Barron born 1807 Bellie Elgin Morayshire. He married Elspet Falconer and had a number of children. Some of them went to Toronto. George had a sister Jane Barron born 1813 in Bellie, who married John Henry Kerr, a mariner. They lived in St George in the East, London. They had a number of children including Margaret Hossack Kerr b 1852, who married in 1900 but did not have any children. They also had George Barron born 1844, a lighterman who had a number of children. There was another son John Kerr born 1840 who married a Sarah and had 3 children. He was a stevedore.Another son William Barron Kerr was born 1842 and died 1877 in London. It is possible John Henry Kerrs mother was Margaret Hossack born 1791 in Scotland.I have a lot more information to share so if you are interested in this family please contact me.Regards Jocelyn

Well done! I have spent most of the day browsing the site and using the information obtained to fill in gaps and clear up some mysteries. It must have been a tremendous undertaking to bring this facility to fruition. Is there a way in which additional information could be provided and added to the site or, if an error/omission is noticed to draw attention to it to enable it to be corrected? In asking this I am not being critical of the work done but in a project this size it would be impossible to ensure it was 100% accurate.
I am looking forward to using it over the weeks and months ahead and only wish other authorities would make the same effort to put their archive material online for all to access. Once again WELL DONE.

WOW,,, what a wonderful site. Thank you to Anne Burgess for the link to this site. I went to look never thinking that I would actually find anyone on my family that I am trying to trace, but I was very happily surprised to find MY line of the FRASER family. I found James Fraser and his wife Janet Ritchie, then looking furthur found Janet's family too. It was wonderful to see. James & Janet came to Australia and settled with their family here. The most exciting thing to read was that there was a "complaint against him in 1858 from dropping dung upon the street". Little things like that help to really make a family story up and not just names and dates. Again thank you for a WONDERFUL site, I will be back many more times to keep looking.
